DHC was formally established in 1992 and is underpinned by the worldwide Healthy Cities ethos, a concept first developed and promoted by the World Health Organisation.

Over its sixteen years of development, DHC has endeavoured to make a positive contribution to the health and well being of the North West area, working at both a strategic and operational level. Throughout this period, DHC has operated within an environment that is characterised by rapid change with new structures emerging, new but reduced funding opportunities, and increasing competition. DHC is the longest serving, inter-agency, inter-sectoral public health partnership in the North West.

DHC has been revitalising both its internal and external processes to develop itself into a leaner, more responsive and proactive community based health improvement body. Central to this is the adoption of a mission and vision that underpin the future activity of the organisation. In addition, the creation of a new operational entity called ‘Health North West’ is being developed to house DHC’s operations that impact equally across the Council areas in the West of Northern Ireland beyond Derry.
